The sound of riot is gradually building tensions from diminuendo to crescendo in New York, March 2025. Matilda Mother band draws inspiration and reports the mood of the streets, parks and avenues. Read music reports and feel the atmosphere of protests; are there drums playing or can you hear the distant strumming of a guitar?
Can you hear the sound of riot? We have had great success with our YouTube live broadcasts. Since our last visit to New York in September 2024, we have gained new followers almost every time we stream. We have been using free Studios in different libraries near Helsinki or Espoo and have been streaming about once a week, mostly on Fridays. We have received a lot of comments, some of them are very sweet. Play free bird, Haden is happy when you play and you look so happy when you play together, if you choose the nice ones and leave the ugly ones behind.
Making movies, setting out a jungle beat. Sound of riot, bringing in the dawn. Let there be more light, may it shine, make things grow. Footsteps behind you, still there is no-one there. Jump on roller coaster ride, making movies, Hollywood here we come. The owners prefer psychedelic stuff and they like to convert others too. They are always willing to share their knowledge.
We tried to organize a gig this time in a cafe or bar near New York. We asked Young Ethels in Brooklyn. But after many emails we found out that we have to sell the tickets ourselves, about 20 x 20 dollars each band and there have to be three bands on the night. It would be possible to get a gig there, but we had to find two local bands to perform with us. We couldn’t organize this so quickly and it’s difficult to settle things out from Finland. The other place we asked, was record store Catalyst, but the owner told, that we are too avantgarde. In the sound of riot, we are struggling with same problems again. We needed a promoter or a manager to sort gigs and performances.
Bowery is in front, Canal street in right side, uptown is in left, downtown in right side. Eastside is in front, westside behind. Chinatown talks; excellent net connections. Instead of merely bad, disaster is approaching.
Amazingly calmly and quietly you can watch from the side as things go wrong.
We found Tin Pan Alley by chance while looking for a record store on Sixth Avenue. It’s a small protected section of 28th street at 47-55. It’s all about the history of music production and its development. It served as an active stage for several smaller publishers from 1885 to 1950. At first, the main focus was publishing on sheet music and writing musicals as well as producing Broadway musicals.
We noticed a small announcement on a pole the day before, that there would be a demostration the following day.
Matilda Mother band thanks New York and New Genre Baby continues its travel to another dimensions. Final summary: 17 new songs written and recorded demos at hotel in Chinatown.
